A BLIND SINNER
(Mark 10:46-52)
Jesus had been to Jericho to preach the words of God and, as he leaves, he passes by the blind man Bartimaeus. This man sits by the side of the highway begging. His predicament reminds us of those who cannot see with their spiritual eyes because Satan has pulled the shades down on them. In II Co. 4:3-6 we see that the gospel (good news of salvation) is hid from the lost man. We see that the god of this world (Satan) has blinded their minds lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ should shine unto them. Christ has come and passed through, and, like blind Bartimaeus, the opportunity for the lost man to see salvation is almost passed, the day of grace is almost over. When he heard that Jesus was there he began to cry out for mercy. He wanted Jesus to open his eyes, and Oh, there are so many today who need to have their eyes opened, to see the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. His cry was heard and Jesus waited for him to come. We are reminded of Paul’s words in Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.“ The blind man was told to come to Jesus, this was his moment, it may not come again. Fearful lest he should trip and not get to Jesus, he cast away his garment and came to Jesus. This is a beautiful picture of what God wants the sinner to do. The sinner coming to Jesus must put off his self-made robe of righteousness lest it keep him from coming to Christ for salvation. In Isaiah 64:6 it says, “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” The lost man must give up on his efforts to make himself acceptable to God. He must take the place of an undeserving sinner and accept the grace of God in Christ, “for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:8,9). The blind man received his sight by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The lost man is saved and receives spiritual sight when he trusts the Lord Jesus Christ as his only Saviour. If you are not saved and going to Heaven, will you come to Christ today by faith and be saved?
